Mountaineering group extends outreach drive in Itogon

by Liza Diase

Baguio City (20 March) -- A Cavite based mountaineering group in their outreach dubbed as "Tugon sa Itogon - 2" donated and delivered school supplies for the pupils and students of the remote schools of Oling Elementary School and the Fianza Memorial National High School - Bantic Annex both in Dalupirip, Itogon, Benguet last February 20-21, 2010.

This is the first time for Adventure Trekkers (ADTREK) to reach Barangay Dalupirip although they are not new in Itogon. The group is a frequent visitor of the municipality of Itogon because of their support and participation to the Annual Mt. Ugo Summer Climb.

Eric Escalante, the group's coordinator, signified their interest with this writer to extend outreach service with the request that it will be in a far flung school and it does not matter if they will hike long trails just to reach the area, thus Bantic and Oling were recommended.

This was immediately informed to Punong Barangay Ramon L. CariƱo of Dalupirip and Mr. Sammy Ayangdan, the Teacher-in-Charge of both schools who both acted upon to support the activity. The local government unit of Itogon provided the municipal truck to convey the visitors and the supplies from Baguio City to Balococ, Dalupirip and back.

After giving few details about the place and after providing the complete list of the pupils/ students to ADTREK, Eric broke the good news that the group agreed to have an outreach in the area.

The group was amazed by the way the school and the community welcomed them. As a sign of gratitude, both schools prepared a simple yet superb entertainment in a late afternoon program before the distribution of the supplies. The program was hosted by Oling Elementary School.

The parents and the children were indeed very happy as they disclosed that it was the first time that a group would reach their place to donate school supplies. The children also played games that ADTREK introduced. A few teacher materials were also given to the teachers.

This is the second time that the Adventure Trekkers (ADTREK) of Cavite extended their simple help to show their affection for the people of Itogon. The first time was in November 27, 2009 when they were among the groups who responded to the needs of the evacuees affected by the landslide at Luneta, Loacan, Itogon as a result of typhoon Pepeng.

ADTREK is composed of businessmen and employed professionals whose objective is to encourage people to work in harmony with nature. (Itogon)
